PODIUM FINISH FOR TEAM ACHILLES AT MOTEGI RACING SUPER DRIFT CHALLENGE AT THE GRAND PRIX OF LONG BEACH
March 24, 2017
A field of pro drivers from the Formula DRIFT series took part in an invitational competition held at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 15th and 16th. Two drivers from Achilles Radial, 2013 Formula DRIFT Champion Michael Essa and Dean “Karnage” Kearney represented Team Achilles at the event. Kearney qualified in the third position with Essa right behind him in fourth. This set the two drivers up for a straight shot into the Great 8 as they would both have bye runs in the Top 16.
Michael Essa defeated Kyle Mohan to advance to the Final Four with Dean Kearney knocking out the reigning champion, Fredric Aasbo, in one of the best battles of the night. Kearney would retire in the number four position, narrowly missing the podium. Essa would face number one qualifier Odi Bakchis in the Final Four, but Essa was not to be stopped. He would move to the finals where he would ultimately finish in the number two position. This is the first podium finish for Michael Essa since joining Achilles Radial at the beginning of the 2016 season.
Team Achilles will next compete at Round 2 of the Formula DRIFT Championship at Road Atlanta on May 6th and 7th with drivers in both the PRO and PRO2 classes.
